Mr. Cappy the Capybara
Happy Friday! Wow, Summer sure has flown by. We started school this week and it has really thrown our schedule for a loop. Everyone had a great first day back, all smiles and no breakdowns, so I will consider it a success! My oldest son, Tate, helped me design the capybara. He really pushed for a little hat and made sure the size was just right. He also wanted to name him so, Mr. Cappy the Capybara it is! It is the best feeling when my kids want to be invovled. Their excitement is a big part of my motivation. This crochet pattern is considered to be low sew as the arms and legs are attached as you crochet the body and head. The only pieces that will need to be sewn separately are the ears and hat. The capybara is also a pretty quick make, I can make it in just under an hour. Some of my testers said it was about an hour and a half. This would be a great item to add to your markets!

Notes
This is an intermediate pattern, some amigurumi experience would be helpful. However, reach out with any questions or concerns. Please read through the entire pattern before beginning. This pattern is written in US terminology. It is made in continuous rounds. Do not ch 1 or sl st at the end of each round unless instructed to do so. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stitch count is in ( ) at the end of each round. Make sure your count is correct before moving to the next round. Let’s get started!
Arms
With a 4mm hook and Color A | make 2
Rnd 1: sc 8 in mc (8 sts)
Rnd 2-5: sc in each st (8 sts) ••4 rnds••
Do not stuff. F/O. I like to leave the arms 1 open, but you can pinch the opening & add 4 sc across to close if you prefer. The arms will be joined as you crochet the body. Leave a few inches for the tail (picture 1).
Legs
With a 4mm hook and Color A | make 2
Rnd 1: sc 8 in mc (8)
Rnd 2-7: sc in each st (8 sts) •• 6 rnds ••
Do not stuff. F/O. I like to leave the top open for the legs, but you can pinch the opening and add 4 sc across to close if you prefer. The legs will be joined as you crochet the body. Leave a few inches for the tail (picture 2).
Ears
With a 4mm hook and Color A | make 2
Leave a long starting tail.
Rnd 1: sc 8 in mc (8)
Sl st to the beginning sc and fold the ear to pinch at the sl st so the tail from the mc is on the back. Add 1 sc across to shape the ear. F/O leaving a long tail. Weave the starting tail down with the ending tail. Both tails will be used to secure the ears to the head. (pictures 3-4).
Body & Head
With a 4mm hook and Color A
Starting at the bottom and working up to the head. If you use safety eyes, insert them between rnds 22-23. Placement could vary depending on the size eyes you use. Stuff as you go. The legs and arms will be attached as you crochet the body. Take care to insert the hook into the front and back of the limbs when attaching them to the body. It is very important to line up all the pieces. Due to tension, stuffing and the type of yarn used, exact placement may vary slightly. Adjust st marker as needed.
Rnd 1: sc 8 in mc (8 sts)
Rnd 2: inc x 8 (16 sts)
Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x 8 (24 sts)
Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x 8 (32 sts)
**The legs will be attached in the next rnd. The legs should hang down in front of the body with the working rnd at the top. Tie the yarn ends from the legs together loosely.
Rnd 5: 10 sc, attach the first leg with 4 sc through the leg and body, 4 sc, attach the second leg with 4 sc through the leg and body, 10 sc (32 sts) (pictures 5-7)
Rnd 6-12: sc in each st (32 sts) ••7 rnds••
Rnd 13: [2 sc, dec] x 8 (24 sts)
Rnd 14: sc in each st (24 sts) (picture 8)
**The arms will be attached in the next rnd. The arms should hang down in front of the body with the working rnd at the top. Tie the yarn ends from the arms together loosely. They should be lined up with the legs. Adjust the st marker if needed.
Rnd 15: 7 sc, attach the first arm with 4 sc through the arm and body, 4 sc, attach the second arm with 4 sc through the arm and body, 5 sc (24 sts)
Rnd 16: [sc, dec] x 8 (16 sts)
**Stuff the remainder of the body firm, but don't over stuff.Over-stuffing will cause the arms to stick straight out. Starting the head next. The face will be shaped with inc and dec sts centered in the front for rnds 17-23. Adjust st marker as necessary to ensure the face is centered.
Rnd 17: 5 sc, [inc] x 8, 3 sc (24 sts)
Rnd 18: 9 sc, [inc] x 8, 7 sc (32 sts) (picture 9)
Rnd 19-22: sc in each st (32 sts) ••4 rnds••
**The dec sts will start next. The first dec st should be lined up with the middle of the first arm (place a st marker here) and the last dec st should line up with the middle of the second arm (place another st marker here). Make sure the dec sts are centered on the front of the face. Adjust main st marker as needed (picture 10).
Rnd 23: 10 sc, dec x 8, 6 sc (24 sts)
Rnd 24-26: sc in each st (24 sts) ••3 rnds••
Rnd 27: [sc, dec] x 8 (16 sts)
**Continue stuffing.
Rnd 28: dec x 8 (8 sts)
Finish stuffing. Sl st into the next st to F/O. Weave tai through the FLO of the remaining 8 sts, pull to close. Shape the face by pushing in on the sides (picture 11). The body and head are complete (picture 12).
Assembly
• Pin the ears over rnd 26 with approximately 8-10 sts between. I like to line the back of the ears up with the back of the arm (picture 13). Sew them in place or pull the ends through with a crochet hook and tie them together to secure.
• Use pins as a placeholder for the eyes. The eyes will be sewn over rnd 23 with about 5 sts between. Using black worsted weight yarn, wrap around rnd 23 approximately 6-8 times. From the bottom of the eye, go up and over 1 st to form the "v" shape on the side of the eye (pictures 14-16).
• Use pins as a placeholder for the nose. The nose will be sewn in a "Y" shape over rnds 19-20 with about 5-6 sts between, then down 1 st (pictures 17-22).
Cap
With a 5.5mm hook and Color B
Rnd 1: sc 6 in mc (6 sts)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Turn, then sc in the next 4 sts (4 sts) **short rnd
F/O and leave a long tail for sewing. The cap will look flat at this point (picture 23). It will be shaped when it is sewn to the head. Weave tail to rnd 2. The beginning tail can be used in place of stuffing. This is personal preference. Pin the cap between the ears and pinch slightly so the hat doesn't lay flat. Lightly stuff as you sew rnd 2 of the cap over rnd 27 of the head. Do not sew the bill (pictures 24-25).
